Commercial Heat Pump Chiller Technical Documentation & Engineering Support
Consulting engineers and contractors do not select equipment from a brochure. They need the unit to fit the plant room, perform at the design condition, talk to the building controls, and pass a submittal review. This page holds what EXINDA issues for that review, and what we need from you to return a selection.
Commercial Heat Pump Chiller Categories
EXINDA FLEX covers three architectures. The heat source and the overlap between heating and cooling loads decide which one fits.
Modular air-cooled heat pump chillers. R32, North American configuration at 208 / 460 / 575 V, 3 Ph, 60 Hz. The 12-ton and 24-ton platforms cascade for capacity and redundancy; eight 24-ton units run as one plant. No cooling tower, no condenser water loop. CSA certified; AHRI certification in progress. See the air-cooled modular range.
Water-to-water heat pump chillers. R515B scroll and screw machines for buildings with a ground loop, a process water source or a central condenser loop, and for projects that need higher supply temperatures than air-cooled units deliver. See the water-cooled range.
Four-pipe heat recovery chillers. R454B units producing chilled water and hot water at the same time from one machine, in North American (40 Ton, 60 Hz) and European (140 kW, 50 Hz) configurations.
Water-to-Water Heat Pump Chiller Applications
Water-to-water is the machine for hydronic heating retrofits where the existing terminals were sized for boiler temperatures. The FLEX 118 kW R515B scroll unit delivers hot water to 85 °C, with 118 kW rated cooling, 186 kW rated heating and 175 kW in high-temperature heating, at 380 V / 3 Ph / 50 Hz, designed to EN 14511, ISO 817 and EN 378. The 33.5 RT version is configured for 460 V / 60 Hz projects. Larger loads move to the 337.5 kW water-cooled screw platform.
The typical project is a commercial heating retrofit: radiators or existing fan coils stay, the boiler comes out, and the supply temperature stays high enough that nobody re-pipes the building. Rated capacity and COP move with entering water temperature; the submittal states the conditions behind every figure.
Simultaneous Heating and Cooling with Four-Pipe Heat Recovery
A hotel cooling its south rooms while heating domestic hot water, a hospital cooling imaging rooms year-round, an office with a full-glass west facade — these buildings pay twice when heating and cooling sit in separate plants. A four-pipe machine runs independent chilled-water and hot-water circuits and moves rejected heat from one into the other.
The FLEX 140 kW R454B four-pipe unit gives 119 kW cooling with 168 kW heating in simultaneous operation, combined COP up to 8.2 at the stated conditions. Hot water reaches 60 °C down to −20 °C ambient and 55 °C between −25 °C and −20 °C; up to six units cascade at 380 V / 3 Ph / 50 Hz. The North American FLEX 40 Ton R454B four-pipe unit gives 34 Ton cooling with 48 Ton heating simultaneously, hot water to 140 °F, cascade to eight units, at 208 / 460 / 575 V, 60 Hz. CSA certified; AHRI certification in progress.
Four-pipe pays back where the simultaneous load is real and sustained. Where heating and cooling seasons barely overlap, we specify a two-pipe machine with separate heating instead.
BMS Integration
FLEX units run PLC control with an on-board HMI and connect to the building management system; multi-unit sequencing runs at plant level, so the BMS sees one plant rather than eight machines. The controls document for each model lists the protocols, point schedule, gateway requirements and alarm mapping for that control version. Send your specification or point schedule with the enquiry and we confirm compliance before quoting.

Each submittal carries rated performance at stated test conditions, electrical data, dimensional drawings, water-side data and installation requirements. Controls and BMS documents, part-load data and certificates are issued per model on request.
Performance is measured in EXINDA's own test stands, built to AHRI test-stand requirements and used for AHRI witness testing: air-cooled from 6 kW to 500 kW in two-, four- and six-pipe configurations, ambient −40 °C to 60 °C and humidity to 95 %; water-cooled to 500 tons (1,758 kW) with leaving water to 100 °C.
Selection Checklist
Send these and we size the plant:
- Building type, location and design ambient conditions
- Heating and cooling loads, and whether they occur at the same time
- Required supply and return water temperatures on each circuit
- Available power supply — voltage, phase, frequency
- Heat source: air, ground loop, process water or condenser loop
- Plant room or roof constraints: footprint, access route, structural limits, sound limits
- Refrigerant restrictions, local code or certification requirements
- Controls: BMS protocol and any point schedule already specified
Drawings and a load schedule are welcome but not needed to start. Mark which requirements are hard constraints — they decide the machine.
Request a Technical Review
Send your project conditions and we return a model selection, rated data at your conditions, and the submittal set for that model. Where a requirement falls outside the range, we do not propose the nearest unit.
Distributors and HVAC brand partners evaluating the FLEX range for a territory request the commercial product information pack through the same form.
