EXINDA Modular Heat Pumps Balance Heating and Hot Water Demand
This Calgary multi-family community comprises two five-storey apartment buildings with approximately 200 rental units. Variable space-heating demand, sharp morning and evening domestic hot-water peaks, and the need to maintain uninterrupted service for residents created a demanding year-round operating profile.
EXINDA Modular Heat Pumps Balance Heating and Hot Water Demand
This Calgary multi-family community comprises two five-storey apartment buildings with approximately 200 rental units. Variable space-heating demand, sharp morning and evening domestic hot-water peaks, and the need to maintain uninterrupted service for residents created a demanding year-round operating profile.

Rather than replacing the existing boiler plant entirely, the project adopted a modular hybrid approach. Heat pumps handle normal heating and domestic hot-water preheating, thermal storage absorbs short-duration demand peaks, and the boilers remain available for extreme winter conditions, final water-temperature lift and emergency backup.
Six EXINDA 24 Ton R32 Commercial Inverter Air-to-Water Heat Pumps—three serving each building—provide independently controlled, staged capacity. Inverter-driven EVI scroll compressors support efficient part-load performance and reliable low-ambient operation, while BACnet or Modbus integration enables runtime rotation, coordinated sequencing and module-level isolation.
The completed system reduces routine boiler use without compromising resident comfort or hot-water availability. Its modular design also simplifies maintenance, limits the impact of individual equipment downtime and gives the property a practical, scalable path toward greater electrification.
Testimonials
Ryan Mitchell
Project Manager
“EXINDA’s modular configuration made the retrofit practical for two occupied buildings. The controls integrated with the existing system, and the hybrid design allowed us to reduce routine boiler operation without depending on a single piece of equipment.”
Daniel
Property Manager
“The transition has been much smoother than we expected. The heat pumps handle the normal heating load, while the existing boilers remain available for the coldest days. Most importantly, residents continue to receive reliable heating and hot water without noticing how the system operates behind the scenes.”
Michael Turner
Building Operations Manager
“Having three modular units for each building gives us much more operating flexibility. We can rotate equipment, respond to changing demand and isolate one module for service without taking the entire heating system offline.”
