Data Center Solution

Modular Data Center Cooling System for a Chicago Enterprise Facility

The initial cooling concept for this Chicago enterprise data center relied on a single large central chiller to support year-round server operation. While the system could meet the peak cooling load, it offered limited flexibility during maintenance, responded poorly to changing IT loads, and created a potential single point of failure.

To improve cooling availability and make future expansion easier, the design was changed to a modular N+1 configuration. Dividing the load across multiple chillers allows capacity to follow actual server demand, while keeping standby cooling available if one module requires service.

The final solution uses four EXINDA 30 Ton Modular Water-Cooled Scroll Chillers in a three-duty, one-standby arrangement, providing 90 tons of active cooling and 30 tons of backup capacity. Operating on 460V/3Ph/60Hz power and integrated with the building management system through BACnet or Modbus, the EXINDA system enables staged operation, runtime rotation and module-level isolation—delivering scalable capacity, easier maintenance and reliable cooling for continuous data center operation.
